Chapter 53

As the sun began its painfully slow and dramatic descent like it was some sort of a f**g Disney princess, it casted a warm golden glow over the palace and I could not help but marvel at how beautiful it looked even though all I wanted to do was get the hell out of it. There was only one thing that kept me going throughout the day and it was my outing with Brax.

He did not say what time we were going out or where we were going but I did not care, I just wanted him to get me out of here. I did not care if he was taking me to the wilderness, time with Brax was always time well spent no matter what it was that we were doing. He listened to what I had to say and said things that did not make me want to drive a stake through his heart.

I looked down at myself, I was utterly confused. I did not know what to dress up for, I had not the slightest idea where we were going and asking him felt too forward. I paced around my room, wondering what to do with my hair and going through the clothes that I had, they were not a lot.

A knock finally came on my door and I could not hide my excitement as opened it. Brax had arrived to escort me to the mysterious destination and he greeted me with a warm smile.

“Someone’s excited.” He teased and I giggled. He laughed too, equally excited for where we were going. We enjoyed being around each other and there was no shame about it.

His friendly demeanour put me at so much ease as we walked towards his car, a sleek black vehicle that seemed to embody the power and prestige of the family that I never once attributed with him. He had always seemed like such an ordinary person and it felt like I was seeing him in a new light.

“Are you sure you want to take me along?” I asked, uncertainty tingeing my voice. It suddenly looked like I was not dressed for the occasion even though I did not know where we were going.Content is © 2024 NôvelDrama.Org.

He flashed a reassuring smile. “Of course! I’m excited to show you this place.” He said boldly and I was suddenly calm again. It never really mattered what I wore with Brax anyway, he was not as shallow as his brother.

He opened the car door and put his hand up to stop me from hitting my head and my cheeks heated in a blush. It was the sweetest thing ever. Brax felt like a man that only existed in my imaginations but I knew that except I was mad, which I knew h was not or Aston would have had me locked up and thrown into the ocean somewhere, then he was standing tight next to me.

I paused midway to look at his icy blue eyes that was a stark contrast to his beautiful personality and he flashed me a soft smile. “You look really nice this evening.” He said almost like a whisper, his hot breath against my face and I almost melted.

Leaving me feeling like jelly as I sank into my seat, he turned around and got into the driver’s seat, flexing his broad shoulders as he got in.

With that, we settled into the car, the engine purring to life as Brax expertly maneuverer us down the winding driveway and onto the open road, taking his time to flex his sleek arm muscles as he did.

He had the kind of arms that made you want to tie him down and dress him up in nothing but turtlenecks and eat ice cream from his chest at night when you were feeling sad.

“Could you at least give me a hint? I’m dying of curiosity.” I said and he chuckled.

“Try not to die, please. You won’t want to miss what I have to show you.” He said and successfully managed to make me even more curious.

“That did not help my situation, not even one bit.” I told him and he giggled knowingly.

“I know but it helped me.” He laughed and I nudged his chest playfully. It felt so warm underneath my hand and I did not feel like taking my hands away but that would be so weird.

The conversation flowed easily between us as we sped along, sharing opinions on a variety of subjects that I did not even consider conversation worthy, We talked about random things that we saw on the road and at some points, it occurred to me that I hadn’t been out in a long while and it made me feel a lot like a prisoner.

Despite the playful nature of our discussion, I found myself enjoying the exchange, grateful for the brief break from the tension that had become my life since my arrival at the mansion. Being with him always felt like taking a breather from my hard life and not everyone got that. I was truly grateful.

The landscape outside the window transformed from bustling city streets to sprawling countryside, the vibrant hues of nature painting a beautiful serene image to our journey that made me want to take mental images.

As we rounded a bend in the road, I assumed that it was our destination that finally came into view because it was the end of the road and Brax was slowing the car down.

It was a picturesque waterfall positioned within a fresh oasis. The falling water glittered in the late afternoon sun, creating a beautiful display of light and colour that took my breath away. Literally.

I forgot to breathe just staring at it and when I turned to look at Brax, he had a smug look on his face.

Brax pulled the car to a stop and retrieved a blanket and basket of food from the trunk that I did not even know was there, explaining that he’d gotten the help of a maid to prepare a picnic for us.

I was deeply touched by the gesture, a surge of warmth flooding my chest ensure our time together was enjoyable.

“Thank you, Brax,” I said, my voice shaky with emotion. “This is lovely.”

He beamed, clearly pleased by my reaction. “I’m glad you like it as I realized the effort he’d gone to in order to

We made our way to the base of the waterfall, spreading the blanket across the soft grass and settling down to enjoy the peaceful surrounding that we both didn’t get much of back at the palace.

As we savoured the varieties of delicious treats from the basket, our conversation inevitably turned to the events that had brought me back to the mansion after I was kidnapped the last time we were supposed to have an outing.

“How did Aston manage to find you when you were kidnapped?” Brax asked, curiosity shining in his eyes.

I hesitated, unsure how to answer. “I honestly don’t know,” I admitted, my thoughts drifting back to that traumatic night. “But I do remember Aston warning me never to reveal to anyone that we’re fated mates.” I imagined saying and smiled to myself which had Brax raising a brow in confusion.

I chewed my lip, debating how much to disclose. “I have reason to believe that Mara was behind my kidnapping,” I confessed, my voice barely above a whisper. “She sees me as a threat.”

Brax nodded slowly, a flicker of sympathy crossing his face. “I can’t say I’m surprised. Mara has always been ambitious, and she’s not one to take kindly to anyone who might stand in her way.”

I told him about the incident in which Mara had deliberately tried to trip me, and how Aston had stepped in to defend me. Brax listened intently, his brow furrowed in thought.

“Aston is a complex man,” he mused, his gaze fixed on the waterfall before us. “He’s capable of great kindness and compassion, but there’s also a ruthless side to him that can be intimidating. I know it’s difficult to make sense of his intentions, but just be careful, okay? It’s better to err on the side of caution when it comes to this family.” It was the first time that I had ever hear Brax call Aston family and it felt a little weird but I guess they were brothers after all.

felt like telling him about Aston and I being mates because I needed someone to talk to about it but I feared it could make things awkward between us and I could not predict Aston either. He could end up finding out and killing me. I decided against it and I nodded, grateful for Brax’s advice and the kindness he’d shown me throughout the day. As the sun dipped below the **zon, we packed up our belongings and made our way back to the car, the peace of our picnic feeling like a distant memory as we returned to the mansion and the uncertainty that awaited me within its walls.
