Chapter 110~ Her Rage
ATHENA
I freeze when Leah lunges forward, her voice sharp and wild, slicing through the
tense silence like a blade, making everyone halt their movements.
Her eyes are full blazed, angry as she stands before me,
"I don't want Athena or her blood anywhere near my son!"
The words hang in the air, loud, raw, and cruel.
Every head in the waiting room turns.
I slowly pull my hand back from Alex's arm as if I've been burned.
"What?" I whisper, my voice barely audible.
I heard her when she warned me to stay away from her son, and I respected that. Also, it's not my fault he kept coming to see me. What should I have done, kicked him out?
He's a child for crying out loud. Even I who hates both his parents, put that hate aside, and played with him.
"Leah!" Ariana gasps beside her, eyes wide in horror.
Even the nurse holding the clipboard is shocked by the outburst.
One would think I pushed the child myself.
“Why?” I ask quietly, trying to keep my voice steady. "Why are you so angry at me for wanting to help?"
Leah's eyes spark, and she scoffs, folding her arms like she's shielding herself from something unseen.
"Don't act so innocent, Athena. You're always there. Always around. And now this happens?"
The pieces don't connect, at least not in the way she seems to think they do.
"I don't understand," I say honestly, meeting her glare. "What are you implying?"
Leah's jaw clenches, and for a moment, I think she might lunge at me.
"I'm not implying anything. I just don't want you involved. Not your blood, not your sympathy, nothing."
“Are you afraid of something?” I question before I can stop myself.
It would make sense if she was afraid her son becomes more comfortable with
me, and I really understand her anger. But all that understanding takes a wild turn when she opens her mouth to speak,
Her eyes widen. "Excuse me?"
"I assure you, you have nothing to worry about. Rayen has become my little friend, and I just want to help."
I try to soothe the situation, but I guess when it involves Leah, anything I say is adding fuel to the fire because instead of being soothed, Leah scoffs loudly, turning to the others.
"Do you all hear this?" Her friends stare daggers at me as their friend speaks, "She thinks I'm worried about something? I'm his mother! I know what's best for him, and the last thing he needs is her. She's the reason he ended up in the snow to begin with!"
My breath catches.
Alex's jaw ticks as I look at him from the corner of my eye. His eyes are calculating, but he doesn't say a thing.
That's Alex. A man of a few words, but when he opens his mouth to speak?
I shake my head and force my gaze back to this lunatic who keeps running her
mouth while her son is lying unconscious, waiting for blood.
"Leah, I left early, so I didn't even see him or speak to him on my way out."
"Exactly," she snaps. "You weren't there. And he wanted to show you something, didn't he? He went looking for you. You made yourself so important to him and that he constantly has to ask for you! What did you think would happen?!" Cóntent
I open my mouth, but nothing comes out.
The guilt comes crashing over me even though I have no idea if any of it is fair.
"Alright. That's enough," Ariana says, stepping between us.
She puts a gentle hand on my shoulder. "Athena, love... would you mind waiting outside for a bit? I'll join you shortly, I promise."
I hesitate.
My eyes lock with Alex's, silently begging him to say something, anything.noveldrama
But he doesn't.
His face is unreadable, his jaw locked tight, his eyes trained on me, but he doesn't speak. He just watches me.
So I nod. Swallow. And walk out.
The hallway outside is colder than I expected. The fluorescent lights hum softly, and I wrap my arms around myself as I slide down onto the bench, blinking fast against the sting behind my eyes.
"If you hadn't made yourself so important..." Leah's words echo in the back of my mind.
Maybe she was right.
It was my fault.
I'll just make sure he's alright before
I ask lan for a transfer that will be
better. This time I'll just go abroad. I have a lot of emails requesting for
my skills, and I'll be more than happy to really start afresh.
A burst of footsteps echoes down the corridor, pulling me back as the door opens
again.
Ariana emerges, a soft smile on her lips.
"We've started the tests. Sloane..." she exhales, "Sloane's a match."
I blink, surprised. "Sloane?"
Ariana nods. “She's already in with the nurses. They're prepping the transfusion now. Rayen's going to be okay."
Relief hits me so hard I forget to breathe.
"Thank God," I whisper.
Ariana touches my shoulder again. "Don't mind that crazy girl. What happened wasn't your fault. We should have been more careful and she was present too, as his mother she should have paid more attention to him."
“I understand her rage. I'm sure you do too." give Ariana a smile. "I know you've been holding back accepting her because you'll feel like you're betraying me, but for the sake of Alex and Rayen, I think you should."
Ariana laughs.
"You really don't know Alex, my dear. He just doesn't want to marry that girl. When Alex wants something, nothing on this earth would stop my son from getting it."
"It was gratitude not love." Ian's words echo the moment I'm about to correct her.
This man confuses me each day and I hate that I have to think about him despite how much I hate him!
I'm about to respond when my phone vibrates.
I open it to read the text, and my face drains of blood,
