Ryan rolled his eyes. 'Come on. It's me, Mikey. You can tell me the truth.'

If Micah didn't have feelings for his ex-wife, why would he be pissed at Ryan for targeting her?

Ryan threw an arm around Micah's shoulders. 'Honestly, I was only trying to help you.'

Micah shrugged off his hand. 'You can't stay here tonight.'

'Aw, come on! You are not going to save your best bud? After your best bud went to bat for you?"

Micah was unmoved. 'You did it to amuse yourself.'

Ryan touched his nose.

His eyes darted around. 'Well, that could be part of the reason.'

Unlike Micah, he hated getting cooped up in an office, being chained to a desk.

When Felicia called him, he jumped at the chance to have some fun at the expense of Micah's ex-wife.

'You are the only one who can save you at this point, Micah cut him off.

'What do you mean?'

'She reported your dad's company for tax evasion as retaliation against what you did to her.' Micah pointed

out.

Ryan's nostrils flared. 'I still don't know how she managed to do that. How the hell did she get her hands on the confidential memo? Even I don't know about-'

'That's not the point. The point is, you brought trouble to your dad's company because of what you did to Darya. He's not going to let you off the hook unless you make things right.'

'What do you mean-make things right? I don't have any connections in the tax department. I can't make the investigation go away.'

'You can apologise to her.'

'What?' Ryan's eyebrows shot up. 'But I'

'Or she's going to keep coming after you and your dad's company.‘

Micah was speaking from experience as he recalled the incident more than a month ago.

Judy accused Darya of stealing a valuable ring.

Darya retaliated by exposing Felicia's gambling problem.

Micah was certain that if he hadn't ordered Zenith's official account to issue a

public apology, Darya would have gone after him and his company.

Avery's handsome face flashed across his mind.

'No way!' Ryan folded his arms like a petulant child. 'I'm not apologising to that woman!'

He had a reputation to uphold.

What would his friends think of him if they knew he bowed down to a ghetto chick?

Micah felt his phone vibrate in his pants pocket.

He removed it, saw the name onscreen, then handed the phone to Ryan. 'You

might want to rethink that decision after you take the call.'

Ryan groaned when he saw the name. 'How did my dad know I'm with you?'

'He must have tried your phone first.'

'I switched it off. Ryan hunched his shoulders. 'You answer it. Tell him I'm not here.'

Ryan blew out a long breath. 'Fine.'

He stabbed at the 'Answer' button. 'Hi, Dad.'

Even from almost a metre away, Micah could hear Eugene's roar. 'Ryan Mendez! What the hell did you do?'

'Look, Dad, I didn't know-'

'I don't care what the beef is between you and that Darya woman. If I don't see your apology to her online in thirty minutes, you are cut off!'

'Wait a minute! Dad, let's talk about—'

'Thirty minutes!' Eugene bellowed. 'Or you are cut off! Cut off! You hear me?'

He hung up.

Ryan stared at Micah's phone, then he looked at up Micah, who tapped a finger on his wristwatch. 'Twenty-nine minutes and counting.'

'Fine!' Ryan yanked out his own phone and switched it on. 'I'll do it!'

Ten minutes later, his reply appeared online.

'I would like to apologise to Miss Miller for the misleading news story. I should not

have posted it without finding out the whole truth.'

Ryan left Micah's house in low spirits.

His ego had just suffered a crushing blow.

He needed the consolation of good wine and pretty girls, and he needed to do it

before his dad suspended his

credit cards.

Darya saw the apology in the morning, but she was too busy with work toy it much attention.

She studied the proposal on the Solaro project, re-reading the last page multiple times.

The signature at the bottom was a familiar one.

Darya drummed her fingers on the desk.

Then she summoned Sharon Hoyles to her office.

'What is this about?' Sharon asked impatiently. 'I've got work to do.'

'You drafted this?' Darya held up the copy of the proposal.

Sharon stepped closer to take a look at the document. 'Yes, I wrote it. What's the problem?'

'The problem is that we are offering to pay Solaro thirty per cent below market

rate.'

'It's a common negotiation tactic,' Sharon countered. 'We lowball the offer, wait for

a counter, then haggle for a while before both sides settle for a number somewhere in between.'

'That's true if both sides stand on equal footing,' Darya said. 'But Solaro's the market leader in renewable energy. It's a seller's market, and we are not the only buyer.'

If Paragon delivered the proposal, Solaro might take the low offer as an insult and take their business elsewhere. Since Sharon was spearheading the proposal before Darya came on board, she had to suspect that Sharon was doing this deliberately to sabotage the project.

She raised a finger when Sharon was about to speak. 'Change the offer to market rate. I expect to see the amended proposal on my desk before lunch.' Sharon clenched her hands. 'I've been involved in the project for a lot longer than you. I know how things work. Solaro's not the only one we can work with. If they are unhappy with the bid price, we can take a look at Kemp Industries.'

Darya took another look at the woman. 'Kemp Industries?'

'That's right. They may not be the first mover in the market, but they have a proven track record. Solaro's a start-up, but Kemp has been established for decades.'

Darya smiled. 'Okay. Send me what you have on Kemp Industries. I'll take a look.'

'Will do.' Sharon was secretly delighted.

Just as she was about to take her leave, Darya stopped her. 'Meanwhile, take this proposal and make the amendments I asked for.'
