Chapter 018: Choosing to Add Points
The whole training ground was going nuts. Everyone was buzzing about the scrimmage team's epic comeback, Luke's killer tactics, and the heart-pounding match!
Sure, the game only lasted fifteen minutes, but if it had gone the full length, who knows if the scrimmage team could've held up against the third string's relentless attack. That opening pass had a bit of luck, no doubt, but without it, the scrimmage team might've crumbled today. And yeah, the third string was just the benchwarmers' benchwarmers, not exactly powerhouses.
Still, it didn't take away from the shock and awe the game brought. Everyone, except the third string, was blown away. For the third string, though, it was a total nightmare, a complete disaster.
Kevin chucked his helmet to the ground, cussing up a storm. Watching Luke soak up the cheers and victory in the middle of the crowd, he couldn't wrap his head around the fact that a scrimmage player, some nobody from Avalis, actually won this practice game. To him, it was a slap in the face, a real humiliation!
Kevin was about to lose it. He wanted to charge at Luke and throw down, but his teammates held him back, saying, "A loss is a loss, don't make it worse." Those words hit him like a cold shower, snapping him out of it. He saw the main team players looking at him with disdain. Furious, Kevin stormed off the field.
Luke was jumping around, celebrating like crazy. Then he spotted Logan. They locked eyes and burst into laughter.
"You did it! Holy crap! Bambi, you really did it!" Logan shouted. As the main tight end, he had to watch from the sidelines, feeling all kinds of anxious. But seeing Luke win with his own skills and tactics, almost pulling off the impossible, Logan was over the moon, like fireworks going off.
Luke laughed, "Stick with me, and I'll take you to the Super Bowl!"
"Deal, no backing out!" Logan grinned, giving Luke a hard punch on the shoulder and cheering wildly.
This was just a training game, no big deal to most. The main players watched for kicks. But for the scrimmage team, it was a huge milestone in their otherwise dull sports careers. It made them realize the gap between substitutes and scrimmage players wasn't as big as they thought.
People always say, "The ball is round," meaning anything can happen on the soccer field; it's even truer on the football field. Upsets and underdogs are common. Today, the scrimmage team proved it!
"Bambi, what are you doing? Go shower." Training was over, and everyone was laughing and heading back to the locker room. Seeing Luke lagging behind, Derek couldn't help but shout.
The same nickname, sometimes a taunt, but today it was endearing. Not just Derek, but John, Tevin, Wade, and others started chanting, "Bambi! Bambi! Bambi!" Imagining a fawn taking down lions and wolves, their adrenaline spiked.
"What, are you waiting to pick up the soap?" Luke's comeback made everyone crack up, and Derek instantly became the butt of their jokes. The scrimmage team was having a blast.
Luke headed back to the locker room, showered, and changed, finally feeling refreshed. Everyone else had gone back to their dorms, but Luke stayed behind, looking around the empty locker room.
This was just the training camp's locker room, not a college football field's, let alone a pro league's. But Luke couldn't help but dream about standing in a pro team's locker room one day, waiting for his shot. Just imagining it made him clench his fists in excitement.
The excitement didn't last long. After the victory high wore off, Luke calmed down. Today's win was great, but it also showed him his weaknesses. As the system data indicated, except for long passes, he had a lot of gaps, all exposed in today's game. Even his strengths as a quarterback, like mid-range accuracy, short-range accuracy, and mobile passing, were still pretty weak.
Honestly, his standout moments today were just the first and last passes. The rest of the time, he relied more on his smarts: tactical thinking, quick judgment, and reading the opponent. But this was just a fifteen-minute practice game. If it had gone longer, if the opponent had focused more on the first down, the outcome could've been totally different.
Knowing your weaknesses isn't self-deprecation; it's a step towards getting better.

Luke was a bit curious about how he managed to nail that final pass.
In today's fifteen-minute game, his short passes were a total mess, with only two successful attempts that he could remember. At the last moment, he went for a short pass without any clear plan, just making a snap judgment based on the situation. Thinking back now, he must've been out of his mind.
Was it possible the system triggered some kind of Super Saiyan mode to nail that short pass?
That's why Luke was chilling alone in the locker room; he needed some quiet time to think. He summoned the system in his mind again, ignoring the unread messages in the top left corner, and was about to check out his character attributes when he heard Seven's voice, "Congrats on officially unlocking the Willpower option."
"Willpower?" The character attribute panel popped up in his mind, and sure enough, there was a new option. Below "Tactical Awareness: 67," it read, "Willpower: 80." Luke couldn't help but look surprised. "Seven, what's this option all about?"
"In simple terms, it's the ability to stay cool under pressure," Seven explained. "It's like hitting a game-winning shot in basketball or nailing a penalty kick in soccer. The more intense and critical the moment, the more willpower kicks in."
Luke suddenly got it. This explained why he didn't choke at the crucial moment. Among all his character attributes, his highest score was in mental toughness, at eighty-one points. Now it seemed that mental toughness had many subcategories, and willpower was one of them, with a high score of eighty points. This was key to today's training game win.
"So, it's basically a Super Saiyan ability," Luke couldn't help but grin. Pulling off moves beyond his level at critical moments to win an impossible game. "Then why didn't I perform above my level during the freshman tryouts? Even if I couldn't make the substitutes, I could've at least joined the scrimmage team in my freshman year." Seven stayed silent, ignoring Luke's question.

Luke chuckled softly, then opened the unread messages. There were three, each showing that Luke had completed three different tasks. Honestly, completing passes and scoring touchdowns was expected; but winning the game was a sweet surprise.
"Seven, if a task fails, is there no penalty?" Luke suddenly realized this. So far, all tasks had rewards but no penalties. Would this always be the case, or had he just not hit that point yet?
"Task failure will be judged based on the task's difficulty and rewards, with a certain chance of triggering a penalty option," Seven explained dutifully.noveldrama
Luke nodded slightly, "So, the recent training game wasn't significant enough to warrant a failure penalty, right?" Silence followed, but Luke didn't expect Seven to answer. He turned his attention to the basic points in the top right corner: he had three basic points again. How should he use them?
From the recent game, his ability to pass on the move was truly disappointing, with accuracy deviations that were unbearable. His short and mid-range passing accuracy was also unsatisfactory, severely affecting the game's flow. As for other subpar attributes, they were even worse.
Should he choose to improve his passing on the move? Or his short and mid-range passing?
Whether in college football or the NFL, a quarterback's abilities are a comprehensive measure. But it's certain that passing on the move, after evading defensive players, is a crucial skill. A quarterback can't always rely on the offensive line to block opponents every time. Additionally, short and mid-range passing is the mainstay of the game, while long passes are for sudden, lethal strikes.
Furthermore, in college football, the requirements for a quarterback are slightly different. At the college level, players rely more on physical talent, leading to intense physical confrontations and relatively rough tactics. This means a quarterback must be able to release the ball quickly, make rapid judgments, and have some running ability.
Physical confrontation is Luke's weak point. But how can he prevent his weakness from becoming a liability? It's not about avoiding physical confrontation; in football, avoiding physical confrontation means losing the game. It's about passing the ball quickly and accurately before the confrontation arrives!
Thus, short passing accuracy became Luke's choice again. After clarifying his thoughts, he didn't hesitate and immediately allocated all three basic points to short passing accuracy. This increased the attribute to sixty-seven points, getting closer to seventy. After allocating the points, Luke felt reinvigorated. He couldn't wait to start tomorrow's daily training tasks, not just for the basic points but also for honing his fundamental skills! On the path to becoming a superstar, he had finally taken a solid step.
