Chapter 092: Calm and Unruffled
Draft day, man, it's a rollercoaster of nerves and excitement. The whole draft process? Far from a walk in the park. In the first round, each team's got just ten minutes to make their pick. And in those ten minutes? It's a heart-pounding game of strategy.
Before the draft even kicks off, teams are deep in discussions, cooking up all sorts of strategies based on their draft order, their needs, and what their rivals might do. Do they grab the best player on the board, fill a team gap, or trade their pick for something better?
One of the wildest drafts ever went down in 2002.
Back then, the league hadn't reformed yet, and teams had fifteen minutes to make their first-round pick. The Dallas Cowboys, Minnesota Vikings, and Kansas City Chiefs had the sixth, seventh, and eighth picks, respectively. Both the Vikings and Chiefs had their eyes on defensive tackle Ryan Sims.
When it was the Cowboys' turn, the Chiefs' manager called them up, trying to trade up and snag Ryan before the Vikings. But the deal fell through, and the Cowboys missed
their pick.
According to the rules, the draft rights passed to the Vikings, who would now pick sixth, the Cowboys seventh, and the Chiefs eighth. The Vikings had a golden chance to grab Ryan before the Chiefs.
But then, something crazy happened. The Vikings were a mess for the whole fifteen minutes. Miscommunications between their HQ in Minnesota and their team at the draft site in New York led to them missing their pick too.
Then, the Cowboys and Chiefs pulled off a trade, letting the Chiefs draft Ryan, leaving the Vikings stunned and everyone else in disbelief.
Even crazier, in 2003, the Vikings did it again, missing their first-round pick for the second year in a row. This epic fail became a legendary moment in NFL draft history.
The ten-minute draft window isn't just about strategy; it's a mind game among the thirty-two teams!
From the first overall pick onward, each draft result can shake up the entire rookie market. The ten-minute game of wits demands quick decisions, testing not just planning but also decision-making and judgment skills.
All this makes draft day insanely exciting, like an annual drama. The whole draft lasts nearly five hours, a brutal test for every player, fan, and team staff member.
With some time left before the draft officially began, shouts were already echoing from downstairs, "Bambi! Hurry up!" The place was buzzing with excited yells, creating a lively vibe.
After a quick shower, Luke threw on a comfy tracksuit and rushed downstairs. Austin Newman was the first to jump up, raising his hand high for a high-five, "Bambi! Bambi! Bambi!"
Austin is Logan's dad, and sitting next to him is Logan's mom, Tiffany Newman. Despite being a doctor, Austin's more like a tech guy from Silicon Valley-lively, cheerful, and a sports nut. Logan's personality? Totally his dad's influence.
Luke pumped his fist and shouted a couple of times, then smiled and nodded at the two ladies, "Tiffany, Julia." He then leaped onto the couch, knocking Logan off, "Move over, move over, this is my spot, don't you know?"
"Jesus Christ, you're not Sheldon Cooper!" Logan grumbled as he clambered back up, trying to wrestle Luke off the couch.noveldrama
"Boys, boys!" Annie said, half-laughing, half-crying at the two college kids acting like children. "Quiet down, the draft is about to start!"
The TV screen already showed the live broadcast, and the 2011 NFL Draft was officially counting down. Luke and Logan finally settled down, grabbing slices of pizza from the table and enjoying the food while watching the draft. It was hands down one of the best holiday activities.

At 8 PM Eastern Time and 6 PM Pacific Time, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell took the stage to thunderous applause. All cameras and eyes were on him, and the atmosphere suddenly grew tense.
Even though Luke was trying to play it cool, his heart was racing like crazy, and his blood was pumping like fireworks on the Fourth of July! The big moment had finally arrived.
The Carolina Panthers, last year's runner-up, had the first overall pick. Rumors were flying everywhere, especially after rookie training camp. Everyone was talking about stars like Cam Newton and Von Miller, and Blaine Gabbert, who aced the Wonderlic test, was also in the mix, adding some serious suspense to the first pick. Who was it gonna be?
With everyone on the edge of their seats, the Panthers made their choice. Roger Goodell opened the card and announced, "With the first pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the Carolina Panthers select Cam Newton, quarterback from Auburn University." The whole country went nuts. Even though this was expected, the excitement was off the charts when it was official. Panthers fans were going wild on TV, like they'd already won the Super Bowl.
All eyes were on Cam Newton. Dressed in a sharp suit, he looked a bit awkward, but the pride and happiness on his face were clear as day. He walked up to the stage, looking like he was on top of the world, to get his "Number 1" jersey, his smile beaming.
"What a boring pick," Logan said, rolling his eyes. "There are so many quarterbacks this year, and they pick a 'running back' instead. Blaine Gabbert is good, Jack Locker is great, and honestly, picking Bambi would've been the right move, don't you think? They're all blind."
On the TV, Cam was just a silhouette in the flashlights, his expressions hidden. Luke felt a bit of bitterness. To say he wasn't disappointed would be a lie. But hearing Logan's rant, Luke couldn't help but smile, "It's cool, I'll beat him on the field later and get my revenge. That'll be even sweeter."

"Exactly, exactly. Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Drew Brees, none of them were first overall picks. Who even remembers the first picks from those years?" Julia laughed.
"I was worried Luke might be bummed out, but now I think he'll be fine," Annie teased, making everyone laugh.
Luke's mood lifted, and he grabbed another slice of pizza, enjoying his dinner.
The first pick was no shocker, setting the tone for the draft. Rookie selections and trades went smoothly.
With the second pick, the Denver Broncos took linebacker Von Miller; the Buffalo Bills picked defensive tackle Marcell Dareus third; the Cincinnati Bengals grabbed wide receiver A.J. Green fourth; and the Arizona Cardinals picked cornerback Patrick Peterson fifth.
The first trade happened at the sixth pick. The Atlanta Falcons traded up with the Cleveland Browns to pick wide receiver Julio Jones, making him the second wide receiver in the top ten, sparking a lot of chatter.
With the seventh pick, the San Francisco 49ers picked linebacker Aldon Smith. This was the same guy Luke had danced with during his first special mission. First Julio, then Aldon-Luke had met several potential stars at rookie training camp, which felt pretty surreal.
After that, quarterback Jack Locker was picked eighth by the Tennessee Titans, the Dallas Cowboys picked offensive tackle Tyron Smith ninth, and quarterback Blaine Gabbert went tenth to the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Houston Texans picked defensive end Justin James Watt eleventh, and the 2009 Heisman Trophy winner, running back Mark Ingram, was picked twenty-eighth by the New Orleans Saints.
The whole first round had its surprises but was mostly as expected. Strong players were picked, with no shocking upsets or dark horses. After four and a half hours, the first round of the 2011 draft wrapped up.
But this was just the first day of the draft.
What do you think?
