“It’s alright, sweetheart. Do you feel unwell right now?”

Serena nuzzled into Madelyn’s embrace and said softly, “Yes I feel very unwell

Melinda quickly went to get some warth water to wash Serena’s tiny face. hoping to make her as comfortable as possible.

She rarely used the hot water in the hospital ward’s bathroom for Serena and always got warm water instead.

When Madelyn and Serena were alone in the hospital ward, the little girl blinked her huge eyes as she looked at Madelyn. “Mommy.”

“What is it?”

“If I don’t wake up one day, will you take care of Mommy for me? She’s been working so hard to take care of me

Hearing that, Madelyn felt a lump in her throat.

Melinda was standing at the door to the hospital ward, carrying the water. she had run to get. Tears ran down her cheeks.

Madelyn felt a dull ache in her heart, and she pulled Serena into a hug Don’t be silly. Why wouldn’t you wake up one day, Serena? I won’t let you

leave.”

How could such a young child know so much? It made Madelyn’s heart

ache to think of it.

Serena was very weak, so she fell asleep before long. Madelyn and

Melinda gazed down at her sleeping face, both of their hearts feeling very

heavy.

After giving Melinda’s hand a pat, Madelyn said, “Don’t take her words to heart. She’ll be fine!”

“I’m so scared. I’m terrified that she’ll never wake up again,” Melinda said,

feeling the pain in her chest.

Madelyn took a deep breath. She wanted to say something to comfort Melinda, but she realized that there was nothing that she could say.

Before she left the hospital, she went to the clinical laboratories to get a blood sample.

When she came out, she saw Roger leaning against her car door, and her lips quirked into a smile. “Roger.”

“Andrew called me early this morning, saying that he was afraid you were getting scammed. You’ve been focused on completely destroying the Garcias lately. I didn’t think that you had any kindness in you.”

Madelyn was startled, but her smile deepened. “Are you teasing me, Roger? Or are you calling me a busybody?”

He said, “I would never dare to call you a busybody. It’s just that there are so many cases like that in hospitals. Will you be able to help them all?”

“I’m not this kind to other people.” Both Madelyn and Roger were surprised by what had slipped out of her mouth.

It was true. Madelyn had been spoiled by Andrew and the entire Miller family, and she always regarded everything as being beneath her. How could something like this have caught her attention? Belongs to (N)ôvel/Drama.Org.

Madelyn saw Roger looking at her doubtfully. “Why are you looking at me.

like that?”

“Have you really changed, Maddie?”

“Can’t I do a good deed a day?”

“You can, but I want to remind you that a woman who isn’t married and has a child of that age can’t be a good person. You’d better keep your distance, Maddie.”

Madelyn rolled her eyes. “Thank you for the advice, but I have to correct you. Melinda adopted that child. Does that change your mind?”

“Did she really adopt the child just because she said so? Who would give

up their life for a child they just picked up off the streets?”

Roger had heard about Melinda kneeling at the door to the hospital with Serena In her arms. But this wasn’t an unusual occurrence at the hospital. It happened frequently every year.

He never had any compassion for women who brought suffering upon themselves because they were careless with their personal lives.

Melinda had come to give Madelyn her phone, and she was just in time to hear what Roger had said. She turned pale, and she trembled as she

looked at Madelyn.

Madelyn did not continue arguing with Roger as she did not want to

continue the meaningless conversation. “I’m going to work now. Can you move aside, Roger?

“Sure!” Roger took a step back. When Madelyn pulled the car door open to get in the car, she saw Melinda standing in the distance.

When Madelyn saw how pale she looked, she knew that Melinda had heard everything Roger had said.

“Melinda,” she called out to her, her heart aching for her. She promptly walked over.

Melinda handed Madelyn her phone. “Here. You forgot your phone.”

“Um, my brother is just worried about me. Don’t take it to heart.”

“I didn’t take it to heart. I’m afraid that Serena will wake up, so I have to head back now,” Melinda said, rushing off.

Madelyn watched her walk unsteadily. She turned and glared at Roger. ” You always taught me not to talk behind people’s backs. Did you forget that?”
