Chapter 158
Selena's legs turned to jelly, and she stumbled slightly, only for Everett to swoop in, wrap his long arms around her waist, and pull her close, letting her lean against him.
Nearby, Kaylee rushed over to help her husband, tears streaming down her face. She shot an angry glare at Everett, "Who do you think you are, barging in here and attacking my husband? This is a family matter, and I'm calling the cops on you!" Everett, unfazed, dropped his gaze lazily. He eyed Kaylee, who was making a scene, before turning his attention to Claire.
Claire, who had been coolly sipping her coffee just moments earlier, was now in a tizzy, having knocked over her cup. She stood there, flustered, nervously rubbing her hands on her pants.
"Ask her who I am and whether I have a say in this family drama!" Everett said coolly.
Kaylee spun around to challenge Claire, "Claire, your brother's been beaten up, and you're just standing there doing nothing!"
"H-he's... he's Mr. Bennett, Selena's husband..." Claire stammered, her voice barely a whisper, tinged with fear and guilt.
Everyone was stunned. Wasn't Selena supposed to be out of favor? Why would Mr. Bennett show up and protect her so fiercely?
Kaylee blurted out the question everyone was thinking.
Everett smirked, a cold smile that didn't reach his eyes. "My wife and I have always been deeply in love. If you've been listening to lies, that's your own foolishness!"
Kaylee's face was a mix of shock and realization. Suddenly, she scrambled up, rushed over to Claire, and slapped her. "It was you! You couldn't stand Selena, so you tricked us and used us for your scheme. Now, Lydia's arrested. Give me back my daughter!"
Claire wasn't one to back down
easily; she feared Everett but not her
sister-in-law. She retaliated by grabbing Kaylee's hair. "You were the one pushing Lydia to marry rich, flaunting her like some brainless beauty. I thought she had some charm, but she had to resort to drugs! How come she still couldn't snag the guy? Don't blame me when your plan backfires. Blame your useless daughter!"
The scene turned into utter chaos.
Uninterested in the catfight, Everett noticed Derick waiting with the police nearby. He said calmly, "Handle this mess, and make sure you get their confessions word for word." Derick nodded. "Got it; leave it to me!"
Everett then looked down at Selena, his voice softening. "Can you walk?"Content © NôvelDrama.Org.
Still shaken, Selena instinctively
wanted to keep some distance from Everett. She nodded, about to say she could manage. But before she could Everett bent down, one arm around her shoulders, the other scooping up her legs, lifting her into a princess carry.
Selena was stunned.
A sleek black Bentley was waiting at the door. The driver, seeing them approach, quickly opened the back door.
They got into the car, and for a moment, neither spoke. The air was filled with an awkward tension.
Selena couldn't help but think back to yesterday, when she'd stormed off and left behind a few coins in anger, figuring she wouldn't see Everett anytime soon.
Even though she didn't know how Everett had shown up, he had indeed saved her. She was debating whether to thank him when he broke the silence.
His tone was cold and firm. "Selena,
