I held his icy gaze, standing my ground. This not only called for me to be a leader, but a fa- ther. Two roles I needed to play well. "We have one common enemy Alister. This isn't about Kaylee or Avery, this isn't just about my pack. The hunters, those you've been hunting for for years are coming. Do you think they'll just stop at us? If they get Avery what do you think will happen to our kind?"
"She's the first human to turn while being preg- nant. She's the first of many. If they get her, they know everything about us," Henry chipped in." They'll have the upper hand."
Alister's sneer fades a bit but his eyes still re- main hard and cold as they sweep over to Hen- ry. "Do you think I will listen to a word you have to say, Henry, after betraying my trust?"
His eyes snap to mine. " You all broke the law, hiding a rogue amongst you, your son lying that the human was not his mate. By doing so he made me mess with a bond given by the moon goddess. Something not even I should play with. These broken laws deserve punishment far worse than death."
Alister's words loitered in the air like an acidic wind. His eyes so hard and unyielding as he bored them into mine. He was right, not even he should have played with a bond that the moon goddess made. It was considered a bad omen if one does play with such precious bond.
"This isn't about the council anymore Alister," Henry interjected." This is far beyond you and I. If they get hands on her, we are practically screwed. They'll dissect her, analyze her blood, and max her transformation. They will not only learn every secret, they will also learn every weakness and use it against us."
Henry takes a step forward, staring at Alister without blinking. "We can have the upper hand if we play our cards right."
A flicker of doubt passes through the flash of Alister's eyes but it was gone so quickly I begin to question if I had really seen it or not. " You have quite a mouth on you there Henry, for someone who betrayed me and the entire council," A snarl paint on his lips cruelly.
However, his eyes spoke another story, one that fought against the words coming out of his mouth. "Why should I believe teaming up with you will be in my best interest? Hmm? You were willing to hide this dirty rogue," he nudges his chin in Kaylee's direction. " You chose a nasty rogue over the loyalty to the council, loy- alty to our laws."
Kaylee lets out a small growl, surprising us all with her boldness and stuns us all when she suddenly shifts into her human form. Xaden snarls, shifting his bigger form in front of her to block her nakedness from everyone.
"Then punish me if you must," Kaylee hisses, her eyes that were kind and shy from the mo- ment I saw her turned a vicious color of deter- mination and anger. " But don't let your pride make you blind to the fact that we are all in danger if you let the hunters get a hold of Av- ery. Punish me, kill me if you may, but save her."
