Chapter 429
Just a quick peek-and then she averted her eyes away from him. Looking at handsome men too much could lead one's heart astray, and result in all manner of foolish behaviors.noveldrama
Willow used to think that she wouldn't be so shallow a person... now she saw how wrong she was. Everybody liked pretty things, didn't they? It was perfectly natural!
However, she understood that she'd need to get these desires under control. She was only too well aware that she and Jasper were simply not meant to be. Some grudges could never be overlooked.
Yelena Anderson had remained at that restaurant for well on two hours, now. Most of that time had been spent calling up her closest friends to lament her misfortunes, and sigh over her unrequited feelings for Jasper Hughes.
Why couldn't she get him to take an interest in her, in return...?
Maybe the problem, she dared to speculate, was because her grandfather hadn't informed her right away about her promised engagement to Jasper. Had she known all along, why... she'd never have gotten involved with any other men at all! But Jasper had found out about it, and he hadn't been pleased with her.
Right now, the only man she had any interest in was Jasper; but he just wouldn't allow her a fair chance! It was infuriating!
At last, she'd had her fill of belly-aching and she'd filled up her belly as well. As she walked out from her corner of the restaurant, she immediately caught sight of those two, by the window.
The man was dressed smartly in formal businesswear, but his was such a striking image that he occupied a league all his own. It was Jasper Hughes-the love of her life, the man of her dreams!
The sight of him instantly filled her heart with glee, and brought a smile to her face. As she was about to run up to him though, she became aware that there was a woman seated at the table with him.
Yelena took a closer look at that woman. At first, she hadn't had any particular opinion on the matter-but when she realized who it was, her joy was instantly replaced with indignation!
It was none other than that Willow Nason!
Her long, black hair was presently concealing her face from view-but Yelena could tell with one look that it was her, with no room for doubt. She was wearing that same dress she'd worn for her date with Xavier. Her hair appeared a little less damp now, but her make-up and mannerisms remained totally unchanged.
The smile melted off Yelena's face. Right now, all she felt was jealousy and hatred.
She stalked over to their table on her high-heeled shoes, planted her hands on her hips, harrumphed sharply, and addressed her rival in challenge: "Would you get a load of this shameless harlot? When it comes to dating men, you certainly keep a packed schedule!"
Willow's heart skipped a beat when she heard that shrill, unpleasant voice. She looked up to find Yelena confronting her, eager to start some trouble.
Casting a worried glance towards Jasper, Willow replied, "Miss Anderson! Why... what a coincidence!"
"Coincidence, my foot! There's no
use playing innocent with me! I witnessed your romantic little tryst
here with Xavier Hughes, host
hands and whispering sweet nothings to one another! Nottwo hours later, here you are again-but this time with Jasper Hughes! Are you too poor to eat? Forced to go begging from one man to another just to secure your next meal?!"
Yelena wasn't just here to champion truth, love, and justice, but also to strike a righteous blow against evil, as well.
Willow felt a fresh surge of panic rise up within her. She chanced a fearful glance at Jasper. Sure enough, his expression had turned grim, a chilly aura rising up around him like a churning tempest.
Truly, no one could know the hour when their final judgement would come upon them...
Fighting to contain her burgeoning sense of anxiety, she faced Yelena down and replied evenly, "Miss Anderson, one can get away with enjoying food they know isn't good for them; but it is unforgiveable to indulge in slander you know is not true. I've only just stepped out from my best friend's home-Mr Hughes knows as much. It won't do to go around making up such bald-faced lies in service of some sordid personal agenda.”
"But I'm not making it up!" Yelena snapped, glaring at Willow. Then, she scurried over to Jasper's side, her tone of voice softening dramatically, "Master Hughes, I swear I saw this strumpet here with Xavier earlier this evening, sitting at this very same table! In fact, Xavier was in your seat!"
Jasper regarded her solemnly. "Such accusations should be accompanied by proof."
"I've got proof took a photo!"
Yelena fumbled for her smartphone,
with a wicked eagerness to bring about Willow's downfall. How lucky she'd been to catch Willow here, together with Xavier, holding hands and gazing into each other's eyes in the most scandalous way... she'd been quick and clever to snap a photo of that scene while she could.
Her moment of triumph was upon her!
As Yelena began fiddling with her phone, Willow felt her heart tense up, ready to
burst.
