Chapter 51
Chapter 51
Candice was well aware that her current situation wasn’t great, so she didn’t dare to act strong.
She nodded and said, “Thank you.”
Jackson lifted Candice steadily. Although Candice was tall, she was slender. Jackson was well over six feet, so he made her look petite in his arms.
As Jackson held Candice, she looked up and happened to meet Alex’s dark and cold eyes. Candice hesitated for a moment, then averted her eyes.
“Lex?” Sonia tugged at Alex’s sleeve, softly reminding him, “Didn’t you say you made plans to have dinner with Sieg?”
Alex turned away. He glanced at Sonia and grunted, then headed towards the car.
Sonia pursed her lips slightly after giving Jackson and Candice a brief glance. But she soon relaxed and linked arms with Alex.
It was as if she were declaring some kind of dominance.
Candice followed Jackson to the hospital. Her previous sprained ankle had been aggravated, and the doctor sternly warned her not to wear high heels.
Candice felt bad and apologetically said, “Sorry. I know we planned to have dinner together.”
“It’s good. Your health is more important,” Jackson said as he helped her up, “Can you walk?”
Candice changed into flat shoes and managed to walk, albeit with difficulty.
Dinner plans fell through, and Jackson had no choice but to escort her home. However, Candice couldn’t drive due to her foot injury.
“I’ll drive you to work tomorrow,” Jackson insisted.
“No need, I’ll take a cab.” Candice was hesitant to trouble him.
“You’ll have to walk a few hundred meters to catch a cab from here. Are you sure?” Jackson disagreed with
her words. “I’ll pick you up tomorrow morning.”
Candice’s protests were in vain. Sure enough, Jackson arrived on time the next morning.
As he drove Candice to the company, he said, “I’ll pick you up in the afternoon.”
Uncomfortable with the arrangement, Candice was about to decline when she noticed Alex’s Maybach
stopping nearby.
Every morning, Alex would pick up Sonia and accompany her to the company. Initially, there was gossip about Upstodatee from Novel(D)ra/m/a.O(r)g
it, but people got used to it over time.
Candice looked down and entered the company. Not even a few steps later, she heard rhythmic footsteps
“You’re quite clever,” he paused beside her, his tone indifferent as he uttered these words.
Candice’s heart tightened, but her expression remained unchanged. “I sprained my foot. I can’t drive.”
Alex scoffed. “What’s that got to do with me?”
Candice clenched her fist before forcing herself to calm down. “Weren’t you the one asking?”
Alex didn’t reply. He walked ahead, and Candice turned to see Sonia heading towards the coffee shop downstairs. Sonia’s eyes lingered on her, and there was a cautious glint in them.
She was probably speculating about what Alex had just said to her.
Due to her injured foot, Candice spent the whole day at her desk. After all, she was unable to move around easily.
During the lunch break, she overheard colleagues discussing that the power would be cut off for electrical maintenance in the afternoon, so they should leave early.
However, a pile of documents suddenly arrived from upstairs in the afternoon. Candice was so busy with work that she forgot about the impending power outage.
It wasn’t until the office lights went out that she realized.
Just then, her phone rang.
It was Jackson, and he asked, “Candice, haven’t you come down yet? They said there’s an electrical maintenance.”
Candice had night blindness, which meant she had problems seeing clearly at night. However, she could still see enough in the dim light.
She slowly packed her things and replied, “I’m coming down soon.”
Jackson was one of the few who knew about her night blindness. He said, “It’s okay. Wait for me. I’ll come up.”
The weather wasn’t great today, and the office lights dimmed quickly. Candice dared not move and sat at her desk, waiting.
Soon, footsteps approached the door. Thinking it was Jackson and afraid that he might not know where she was, she called out, “I’m here.”
The footsteps halted, then slowly approached her.
Candice could only see a tall figure, but not the face. However, it was unlikely that anyone else would be here apart from Jackson.
Candice whispered, “Could you help me walk? I can’t see very well.”
A disdainful snort followed, and then the figure reached for her. Along with the looming shadow, Alex’s mocking voice sounded out, “Is this how you act cute with Jackson and get close to him?”
Candice hadn’t expected it to be Alex.
She fell silent for a moment before she shot back, “Why haven’t you left yet?”
Pretending not to hear the question, Alex said, “Waiting for Jackson to pick you up?”
When one couldn’t see, their other senses would become more sensitive. Alex’s deep voice sounded as if it
were right by her ear.
Candice tried to stay calm. “I can’t see.”
She had mentioned her night blindness to Alex before, but Candice had always been cautious about this
issue. She had made a big deal of it in front of Alex, so he probably forgot.
Sure enough, Alex remained silent for a while.
Candice asked, “Is there anything else you need?”
She could not see, and her hands on the table were clenched tightly, indicating her nervousness.
Alex looked at her for a moment. Just as he was about to speak, Candice’s phone lit up with Jackson’s call.
In this light, Candice finally saw Alex’s expression-it was stone cold. His dark eyes appeared especially chilly
in this dim light as he stared at Candice.
“Jackson has bad taste to be interested in you.”
A surge of frustration hit Candice. Unable to hold back, she retorted, “Then you’ve been blind for eight years.”
Alex fell silent momentarily and then said, “Candice, you think too highly of yourself.”
He left, and Candice’s phone went dark again, leaving the office pitch black.
When Jackson arrived, he had a flashlight in hand. He reached for Candice as he said, “Did you wait long? I
went and bought a flashlight.”
Candice’s complexion wasn’t great, but she didn’t say anything.
On the day the Silver Ocean Industries’ proposal bonus was distributed, Sonia treated everyone in the secretary department to coffee.
The atmosphere was lively, but Candice remained silent.
No one dared to approach her, as everyone knew that Candice was the main person responsible for the project.
However, it hadn’t ended well for her.
When Sonia handed her a cup of coffee, Candice’s expression turned cold. She stood up and left directly.
She felt irritated. She didn’t expect Alex to handle the matter this way. After all, the bonus from Silver Ocean Industries’ project was substantial.
Candice was obviously uncomfortable about it. Because of this situation, everyone in the secretary department was walking on eggshells around her.
However, the situation became a different story when it reached Alex’s ears. It became that Candice had brought personal feelings into her work.
When Candice went to find Alex, he kept her waiting for a while before casually saying, “If you don’t want to
work, just say so.”
Candice asked indifferently, “Do you have any work for me?”
Alex looked up and watched her with cold eyes. Then, he casually said, “You’re upset, right? The Stugan City
branch is in trouble. Go handle it.”
Candice’s face darkened slightly. The Stugan City branch was the worst-performing branch among all of Aether Corporation’s subsidiaries, and the company had been considering shutting it down.
Yet, Alex wanted her to deal with this mess.
