Chapter 741
Nadine stopped in her tracks and gazed at Gigi. The wind tousled her hair, and beneath the streetlamp, there was an aching emptiness in her eyes that felt almost bone-deep.
"Did you know? I used to love your brother so much. I always thought that if I loved him enough and gave him everything I had, he would eventually love me back. So, every time he hurt me, I came up with excuses to justify his actions. But now, I can't do that anymore.
"For six long years, whenever he and I were at odds, I always searched for reasons to justify his behavior. I never wanted to acknowledge the fact that he didn't love me. I was just lying to myself, you see. But that was just how things were. No matter how many reasons I come up with to justify his actions, the truth is that he didn't love me.
"So, let me make this clear, Gigi. Your brother and I are done for good. I'd appreciate it if you would stop disrupting my peaceful life. We're both adults, and breakups should be dignified." With that, she turned and walked away.
Nadine was determined to leave behind this painful marriage and had no intention of looking back. No matter what Gigi said, she wouldn't return to Hamilton Estate.
There was a quote she particularly liked. "I burned away all my childishness and stubbornness with my determination, and from that barren wasteland, rationality, indifference, and clarity slowly emerged."
Love was nothing more than a mere distraction. It was certainly not worth sacrificing everything for. Once she distanced herself from men and love, life only got better.
Nadine left with firm resolve, and Gigi didn't even have the chance to stop her. She could only watch as Nadine disappeared into the dusk. However, she had no intention of leaving. She stood there, staring blankly in the direction Nadine had gone, hoping she would change her mind.
It was her fault for being cruel to Nadine in the past. This was her chance to atone. Gigi couldn't back down just because of a few words from Nadine. Consequently, she chose the most foolish yet earnest option—she waited outside Nadine's apartment building.
Initially, Nadine didn't pay her any mind until it began to pour outside. The winter night was biting cold, and the sudden downpour caught everyone off guard. It was as if the sky was testing Gigi's sincerity, each drop hitting so hard that it made it difficult for her to keep her eyes open.
Even so, Gigi didn't leave. She stood in the rain, gazing longingly in the direction of Nadine's apartment. Avery noticed her presence and walked over to Nadine in her pajamas. "What do we do?"
Pointing toward Gigi, she continued, "Is she really going to stand dow there all night? Won't she freeze to death? It's freezing out here, and if she gets sick, what will everyone in Janctera City think of you?
Nadine was well aware that she couldn't let Gigi stand there. Gigi had been spoiled all her life, and her delicate body couldn't withstand the relentless downpour.
If she ended up with rheumatism or other health issues and later couldn't have children, she might blame her for it. That was a burden she couldn't bear.
After mulling it over, she said, "Alright, I'll go down for a bit. Don't worry about it."
Nadine grabbed two umbrellas and walked out the door, keeping one for herself and handing the other to Gigi. "Enough already. Go home, it's freezing out here. If you die on my watch, I'll have to bury you, and that sounds exhausting. Please don't make this any harder for me, okay?"
།
Before heading downstairs, she had already made up her mind. If Gigi really did die there, she would be willing to bury her. Gigi's lips were already turning blue, her face pale, and her whole body was shaking.
She parted her lips and said weakly, "I don't want to cause you any trouble, Nadine. I just want you to come home-our home."
As soon as those words rolled out of her tongue, she started to pitch forward. Nadine noticed that and rushed to her side, crouching down and calling emergency services.noveldrama
As she collapsed, Gigi said softly, "Nadine, that place isn't home without you. Please come home with me..."
What do you think?
