Chapter 690
Chapter 690:
Allison blinked, her eyes adjusting to the faintest slivers of light filtering through. Her senses sharpened, and, in a heartbeat, she launched a punch into the darkness. Nothing. Her lenses, tuned to thermal imaging, confirmed it: no heartbeat, no warmth in front of her.
And yet, something blocked her punch. She was not alone.
Then, a low voice, cold as the night, slithered through the darkness. “Got you.”
Her stomach dropped. The voice, familiar and chilling, turned her blood to ice. The open door was a setup, a carefully laid trap, and she’d walked right into it.
To make matters worse, Gordon’s voice came through her earpiece with more bad news.
“Allison, the power’s coming back up!”
Allison couldn’t afford to be identified, so the adrenaline fired through her limbs. Her right hand trapped, she flicked her left wrist and launched a knife forward, aiming not at the man in front of her, but at the fragile light above.
The blade shattered it instantly, sending a cascade of sparks into the dark air.
In the stuttering glow, she finally saw her opponent — a tall figure, silver-haired with eyes like embers in the dark.
Verruckt.
They stared each other down, the faint light from the broken fixture casting just enough illumination to catch the glint in each other’s eyes.
Allison’s gaze shifted to her wrist, pinned firmly in his grip, and she flashed a defiant smirk.noveldrama
“So, you knew I’d come here?” she rasped, her voice altered by the modulator masking her identity.
Verruckt pressed harder on her wrist. “You had no other choice.” His words rolled out like a predator’s growl, his eyes never leaving hers.
He tilted his head slightly. “What’s that in your eyes? Thermal imaging? Clever.”
His perception was as sharp as a hawk’s.
The air around him felt colder than the rest of the room, a chill that seemed to radiate from his very skin.
Allison didn’t respond, instead squinting as she took in his ice-cold demeanor.
“What, did you take an ice bath?”
The corners of Verruckt’s lips twitched in a sardonic smile. “Perceptive as always, I see. I knew someone was tampering when the dust on the server didn’t add up. I had Jareth check — and look, power goes down. You’ve got nerve.” His gaze was as cold as the North Pole. “So, tell me, who sent you?”
“I have nothing to say.” Allison’s voice rasped, a quiet storm buried beneath the hoarse edge.
Before the words could settle in the air, she lunged to make her move.
