However, when she glanced out her window, she spotted Huey’s car parked below.

It was parked in the exact spot Huey had left it the last time, and Bailee realized Huey hadn’t stepped out of the car, except maybe to grab a quick bite to eat.

The temperature was freezing, and with the air conditioning likely running all night, she feared the car was out of power now. “Still letting Huey sit there and suffer in a genie.”

Bailee grabbed her down jacket and dashed downstairs, not even bothering to change out of her slippers. However, the moment she reached the ground floor, she spotted Winona standing outside Huey’s car, furious, knocking on the window.

“Are you out of your mind?” Winona yelled. “It’s freezing out here; how can you sleep in this car? You’ve been here for days now. Won’t she let you inside? Can’t you just go home?”

Huey rolled the window down and cleared the snow off with his fist.

“Why are you being like this?” Winona shouted in frustration. She yanked at the car door but couldn’t get it to open. “Come on, open the door and go back with me.”

Huey leaned back in his seat, refusing to move. “I’m not going back with you. My wife is the one I care about. If you’ve got time to waste on me, maybe you should be worrying about Cad instead. He looks like he’s aged twenty years during your illness.”

Winona, now furious, kicked the car door. “Are you trying to drive me crazy? Why do you have to be with her?”

“If I’m not with her, then who should I be with? Should I live with you for the rest of my life?” Huey replied, his voice weary from repeating himself. “You should find a wife for me, not for yourself. I’m the one who’s supposed to spend my life with her, not you! If you keep trying to meddle in my life, I’ll leave. I’ll take Bailee with me, and we’ll disappear somewhere you’ll never find us. Then, not only will you lose a daughter-in-law, but you’ll also lose me.”

“Good for you! Is this how you speak to me now, all because of her?” Winona, still not fully recovered, was so enraged that she started hitting the car. But in her anger, she lost her footing and fell backward.

Bailee rushed forward to catch her, but the momentum caused her to tumble down, ending up beneath Winona as they both hit the ground.

“Bailee!” Huey cried as he shivered, getting out of the car barefoot. He quickly pulled Winona off of Bailee and then helped Bailee up. “See? Even after the way you’ve treated her, she still saved you. She’s so kind.”

Winona glared, ungrateful for what had just happened. “I didn’t need her to save me!”

“You never seem to appreciate anything, do you? But this time, I can’t just ignore it,” Huey said firmly, without missing a beat. “I owe her my gratitude for saving your life, and the only way I can repay her is by spending the rest of my life with her. If I don’t, I’ll carry the weight of guilt forever.”

As he spoke, he lifted Bailee to her feet and wrapped her in a firm, protective embrace.
