Chapter 186
Chapter 186
Max shook his head, his eyes moist with tears. The unexpected was about to happen, and he wasn’t thrilled about it.
“No, Mom. You can’t leave me like this. You are my best friend.”
The frail woman blinked, tears falling from the corners of her eyes.
“I love you, Max,” she sobbed. “You’ve made me happy, but please make peace with your brother and dad.”
She knew that Max was upset with them, but until he met his mate, he would not be able to handle it if he refused to make amends with his brother and father.
“When we fought for this pack, it was my resources,” his mother revealed bitterly, hiding the pain of her mate cheating on her.
If she had not seen it, she would not have fallen sick. But the fact that she saw it meant she should have rejected him, which she was not willing to do for the sake of her children and pack.
“This was all we had left after using everything to save this pack. It was due to this Crescent Moon Pendant that we chose the name Crescent Moon Pack. It brings good luck.”
Maximus wiped a lone tear from the corner of his eye. His father had talked about the Crescent Moon Pendant before, and Cal wore it during his

How was it that his mother was giving it to him? “Mom, this should be for Cal. He is the Alpha.” He did not want to accept it, as it would seem as if he was envious of his brother’s position and wanted to usurp his authority.
“I know. But you deserve it. You have the heart of an Alpha, but it should not necessarily be in this pack. Please keep it, and trust me, you shall find your mate today.”
The moon goddess answered her prayers, and that was for Max to meet his mate to have companionship. But that would also be a threat to Cal, as he had equally not found his mate.
These were things she could not directly tell Max.
Max thought for a while and took the pendant, wearing it around his neck. “I will take good care of it, but honestly, I don’t want to be an Alpha or beta. I’m only interested in the mate part.”
He just wanted to leave everything behind and build his own world where he would be accepted and not have to fight with anyone or prove himself worthy of what belonged to him.
As to whether his mother heard him or not, that was a matter for another day, but she felt too cold to the touch.
“Mom?” Max called out, his heart breaking as he shook her hand. “Mom?” He rose from the chair and loomed over her, shaking her violently, but the woman did not respond.
“NO,” a shrill tore from his throat, the same time Cal barged in, moved by the scream. The doctors entered with him, and after a moment of examination, it was declared.
“She’s dead.”
Max’s phone began to ring. It was his father. The middle–aged man had received the pictures the woman sent with the message, ‘No need to hide it anymore. Make her your Luna.
Guilt welled up in his heart. If he had the slightest idea that she was aware of his affair in New York, he would not have left.
That woman gave her all, and yet, this was how paid her back. If he had stayed and asked for her forgiveness, she would have lived.
Max answered the call. “You are wrong, Dad; she w

As their mother’s corpse was being taken care of, Cal saw the pendant on the neck of his kid brother.
“Why do you have my pendant?” He was greatly angered, but so was Max.
“Mom gave it to me. It’s no longer yours.” He ran out of the pack house immediately. There was nothing he could do with his late mother’s corpse, but the fact that he sacrificed everything for her was worth it.

“Give it back, Max, or I’ll kill you,” Cal yelled after him. Max quickened his pace. They were soon out of the pack house, as the pack members looked on in shock, seeing the Alpha chasing his beta.
The chase got intense until Cal was distracted by a female scream when they reached the borders of the Riverbed pack and diverted the chase. That was where he met Asena.
Max had seen a girl fall into the water and jumped in, instantly bringing her out. His mother’s last words rang in his ears.
“You shall find your mate today.”
How could his mate be a child? And he felt no bond, but when she opened her eyes, his heart was stolen at that moment.
Only if he had not been a coward and run away when he heard Alpha Nick’s voice, then he would have known more about her.
By the time he returned to the pack, it was late as he had stopped in the woods, taking his wolf form to mourn his mother.
His father was already there with Cal. Nothing about the pendant was said, but by the time Max woke up the next day, the pendant had disappeared from his neck.
For the next three months, he stayed in his mother’s room, searching the pack house from time to time but could not find the pendant, his last gift from his mother.
Later, Cal admitted to taking it but would not give it back, as he insisted on being the rightful owner.
End of flashback.
“Give me the pendant, and I will leave with Aurora,” Max said.
Aurora might not be the girl he saved, and he wasn’t even feeling a mate bond.
However, he was also certain that unless she pushed him away, he would not give up on her, for the fact that she caused his heart to race.
“You will never have it,” Cal said mockingly, Max was pained, and his fingers balled tightly.
“Just get out of my room. I want to be alone,” he said, but Cal did not budge.
“We have to talk.”
Max only wanted to hear whatever he had to say for the sake of having his privacy. “Hurry. I’m starving.”
Cal closed in on him, his gaze dark. “It’s simple. Stay away from Aurora.”
Max smiled bitterly, maintaining his stand and steps. “If it’s about her, then I’m not hungry anymore. You can spend the night for all I care.” He removed his shirt and singlet before remembering something.
“I’m so stupid. I brought the gift back. I’m taking it to her.” He was already on his way to Aurora’s room when Cal blocked his path. “I said, stay away from her.”
