The Day Our Promise Breaks

Chapter 405

Two years ago, on the day of Charlie's surgery, it felt like a shard of glass piercing Evelyn's heart. Just thinking about it made the pain unbearable.

The caregiver got a call about Josephine's accident and dashed over, breathless and sweating. As she arrived, she nearly collided with Dahlia. Dahlia gave her a quick glance, and the caregiver, catching her gaze, hurriedly averted her eyes and rushed to Evelyn's side.

"Ms. Evelyn," she blurted out, full of regret, "I'm so sorry. It's my fault. I shouldn't have left work to see my daughter."

"I'm truly sorry. I never thought something could go wrong so quickly with Ms. Josephine," she added, tears streaming down as she clung to Evelyn, pleading for forgiveness.

But Evelyn wasn't in the mood to deal with her. The caregiver's sobs only deepened her frown.

Charles stepped in, voice icy and commanding, "Quiet."

His presence was undeniable, and the caregiver fell silent immediately, whispering, "Ms. Evelyn, I'll stay right here. If you need anything, just let me know." She looked genuinely remorseful as she stepped aside.

As Dahlia was wheeled away, she cast one last look back, locking eyes briefly with the caregiver before turning away.

The caregiver stood quietly, eyes red and glistening. Evelyn, however, paid her no mind. Her focus was solely on the operating room doors, silently pleading: Mom, you've got to make it through this.

She wasn't sure if Josephine could hear her prayers, but she was clueless about what else to do. Every tick of the clock felt like an eternity, and she stood there, unmoving, like a statue.

"Eve, the surgery could take a while. Why don't you sit down?" Charles suggested gently, standing by her side.

Without sparing him a glance, Evelyn snapped, "Charles, either leave or be quiet."

She had no patience for his voice. Unable to sway her, Charles stayed put, offering silent support.

Two years ago, during Charlie's illness and surgery, he hadn't been there for Evelyn and her mom. She had faced it all alone. This time, he vowed not to leave her side.

Evelyn knew he was still there, but she couldn't muster the energy to make him leave. Her thoughts were consumed by her mom's surgery. Each second dragged by torturously.

Charles watched her closely, seeing the cracks in her composure, the fear and helplessness in her eyes. It tore him up inside. He ached to hold her, to reassure her. But knowing her feelings towards him, he let his hand drop.

He pulled out his phone and texted Adam again.

Adam showed up in no time. Seeing Evelyn on the brink of collapse, he rushed over, ignoring Charles, and pulled her into a comforting hug "Don't worry," he murmured softly, "Your mom's tough. She'll put

through." swnovel
