The Night I Let Go

Chapter 20

At noon, Zachary and his coworkers from the business department went to the cafeteria for lunch.

After two days of interaction, he had already gotten acquainted with them.

"Zachary, way to go! I've met the obstinate lady from the Stewart family before. She has quite a temper. I didn't expect you to win her over after interacting with her just once."

"Zachary's quite good-looking. Could it be that she was attracted to him? Or perhaps he used the art of seduction?"

"Oh, shit. That's true."

"Zachary, don't tell me that you've scored with that rich girl already?"

"I'd also like to have a rich girlfriend. I want to be a kept man too, Zachary. Please teach me your ways! Don't make me grovel for it."

"What a loser! Go ahead and grovel, then. You'll lose my respect if you don't."

Zachary's coworkers teased him, but it was all in good fun.

He simply chuckled and said that he got lucky. He also told them that to fulfill his mission, he was forced to drink until he was blackout drunk last night.

His coworkers continued to chatter. The mood was lively and harmonious.

"Whoa! Why is Ms. Wayne here?"

At that moment, the eyes of a talkative male coworker sitting across from Zachary suddenly widened as he stared in a direction behind Zachary.

The other coworkers looked over as well.

Anya was walking toward them while carrying a food tray.

Seeing that, the coworkers all fell silent. However, their gazes rested on Anya, who was ambling over.

Anya was dressed in a business suit. On her upper body was a slim-fit suit jacket paired with a white shirt. From her waist down was a black pencil skirt and high heels.

She was a tall woman. Her long legs and hips, which swayed as she walked, were particularly eye-catching.

Many male colleagues gulped as they watched her.

Carrying the food tray, Anya reached Zachary's table. She glanced around the table before smiling faintly and asking, "Is there an empty seat?"

The table was rectangular. Each table could accommodate ten people, which was precisely the number of people at Zachary's table.

Clearly, there was no room for another person. But Anya had still deliberately asked.

The coworkers were no fools. As members of the workforce, they immediately understood what their boss meant.

"Ms. Wayne, I've just finished eating. Please have my seat."

The talkative male coworker sitting across from Zachary quickly got up to give up his seat. Although he had said that he was done eating, he had been chatting for the most part just now and hadn't even finished a third of the food on his tray.

"Thank you." Anya nodded with a smile and sat down breezily.

After a moment's thought, she said to the coworker who was about to leave, "Starting this month, your base salary will be increased by a hundred dollars."

"Thank you, Ms. Wayne! Thank you."

The coworker was thrilled and kept thanking her. He had simply given her his seat, and his base salary had now increased by a hundred dollars.

That was an extra hundred dollars per month. For a year, that equated to 1200 dollars. It was a real bargain.

The rest of his coworkers were incredibly envious.

What an evil capitalist. All she did was humiliate other people with money. It was despicable.

Nevertheless, the other coworkers wished that it had happened to themselves instead.

After Anya took a seat, the coworkers, who were previously chatting, all quieted down.

Although the beautiful CEO was a sight for sore eyes, she had a powerful presence. It was terribly stressful to share a table with her.

Thus, in a few minutes, they polished off the food on their trays and quickly got up to leave.

Before long, Zachary and Anya were the only ones left alone at the table for ten.

Now that the others were gone, Anya relaxed considerably and talked to Zachary. "How is it? Is the cafeteria food to your taste?"

"It's fine," Zachary simply responded as he ate with his head lowered.

Anya felt somewhat upset. She frowned and asked, "Do you have to be so cold? I only saw you naked. That's all."

"Shut it." Zachary blushed and glanced around.

Although he and Anya were alone at this table, the cafeteria was huge. The other nine people on his team hadn't been the only ones there.

Unsurprisingly, after looking around the cafeteria, Zachary realized that almost all the employees were observing him and Anya furtively. It made him somewhat uncomfortable.

With a smirk, Anya looked at Zachary intently.

"I'll shut up if you want me to. Just have lunch with me from now on. I can come to

the cafeteria to eat with you, or you can eat with me at the executive office."

"Are you threatening me?"

Displeased, Zachary furrowed his brows and glared at Anya.

"So, you think I'm the type of wretched woman who would threaten people?"

Anya's face darkened. A wounded look appeared on her face.

With her head towered, she poked at the meat on her tray and muttered, "To be honest, eating by myself is quite lonely. I'm not like you. You have many coworkers by your side, but can only eat alone and get off work alone.

"I want to mingle with the rest too. But I'm the CEO. If I get too close to my

subordinates, I'll lose my authority..."

At that, Anya bit her lip gently, appearing aggrieved and hurt.

"Forget it. Im just a high-level employee, after all. It makes sense that nobody cares about me or loves me. I'm sorry for disturbing you today, Mr. Lloyd. I won't bother you again."

Her eyes teared up and reddened as she got up to leave.

Zachary relented and said in a lowered voice, "Sit down and eat. I'll stay with you from now on."

"Really?" Anya had looked pitiful and teary-eyed a moment ago, but as soon as Zachary said that, her eyes lit up.

For some reason, Zachary had a feeling that Anya had tricked him. It seemed that

all her previous grievances, helplessness, and distress were just an act.

"Mr. Lloyd as expected, you're a kind

man." Anya smiled brightly as she ate and then asked, "Mr. Lloyd, what do you want to eat tomorrow? I'll ask my secretary to place an order."

"Anything's fine," Zachary answered uncaringly.noveldrama

Anya groused, "Don't be so cold. I saw you just now. You were chatting so happily

with your other coworkers, yet you're so cold with me. People will think that I've scammed you."

Zachary rolled his eyes at her and said gruffly, "You didn't scam me, but you tricked me into feeling sorry for you."

"I didn't. Do I look like someone who would do that? Mr. Lloyd, your eyesight is terrible," Anya retorted.

Zachary said solemnly, "You don't look like one. You are one!"

Anya chuckled. "Alright, alright. Whatever you say. You've already promised me anyway. A man should keep his word. You can't go back on your promise."

At that moment, Zachary's phone chimed with a text message notification. He pulled out his phone to read it.

The message was from Ellen. The content gave Zachary an instant headache.

"Babe, I'm already yours. Unblock me right now. Otherwise, ten months from now, I'll bring a child to you for a DNA paternity test."
