Chapter 886
Chapter 886:
Eric laughed, scooping a small bite with his spoon. “Want some before Mommy comes back?”
Joy nodded excitedly. “Yes!”
He fed her one bite, and then another. That was when Hadley walked back in.
Her expression turned cold, eyes narrowing at the sight.
“Mommy…”
“Hadley…”
Eric stood up, visibly nervous, and admitted with a sheepish tone, “Hadley, this is my fault. I shouldn’t have given Joy cake before she finished her dinner.”
“Mommy! I was wrong too. I shouldn’t have had cake before my dinner,” Joy chimed in, mimicking him.
“See?” Eric pointed at the slice of cake in an attempt to smooth things over. “I only gave her two small bites—I didn’t dare give her more.”
“Yes, yes!”
The adult and child echoed each other in perfect sync.noveldrama
Hadley didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. She scooped Joy up and said, “Alright, time to finish your dinner.”
“Okay!” Joy chirped.
Hadley glanced at the cake, eyeing the missing tip. She worried Joy might overeat and upset her stomach. “If you can’t finish all, just tell Mommy, okay? Don’t force it.”
“I can eat!” Joy answered eagerly, gripping her little spoon.
Hadley chuckled and gently patted her head. “Good girl.”

Lately, Joy’s appetite had noticeably improved. Hadley wasn’t sure if it was due to a growth spurt or the new treatment plan after they changed doctors.
After dinner, Joy, exhausted from her afternoon playtime and now with a full stomach, dozed off in Hadley’s arms on the way home.
Cradling her, Hadley stared out the window in silence.
“Hadley.” Eric glanced her way, his voice low and careful so as not to wake Joy. “Are you upset that I showed up without giving you a heads-up?”
Did he really have to ask? Of course she was upset!
She looked at him, expression sharp. “Eric, you broke your promise. You agreed to stay away, and you went back on it like it meant nothing.”
“I didn’t forget,” he said, swallowing hard. His voice dropped into a softer tone. “I just missed Joy too much. But if you’re against it, I won’t tell her I’m her father. I promise. I just want to spend some time with her. Is that okay?”
“Does it matter what I think?” Hadley scoffed. “You already did it. Now you’re asking if it’s okay?”
Eric fell silent, frowning, unable to defend himself.
The car pulled up to Hadley’s apartment. Since she was carrying Joy, Eric got out and opened the door for her.
He grabbed a blanket from the back seat and gently wrapped it around Joy to keep her warm.
“I’ll carry her,” he offered, holding out his arms. “Let me walk you to the door, and then I’ll go.”
“No need,” Hadley shook her head and turned away. “I can manage. You should leave.”
