Chapter 47
Claudia and I didn't budge. Nicholas frowned and said icily," You two sit at the back."
I wondered silently if he truly wanted to reconcile with Claudia. His tone was surprisingly harsh. Since I had accepted s terms the day before, I withheld my anger to ensure I could live separately from him and waive that debt.
After making an effort to be friendly, Claudia and I had smoothed things over quite a bit. As soon as she hopped into the car, she stayed close to me just like before.
Perhaps due to her recent argument with Nicholas, she felt an overwhelming urge to confide. Despite her small stature, she seemed burdened with concerns and a myriad of emotions. I wasn't sure if she was sharing it with me or Nicholas. "Nick used to pamper me so much before. But now, it seems like he's changed," Claudia said.Material © of NôvelDrama.Org.
I noticed Nicholas' ears twitch.
"People change as time goes on. Nicholas is maturing, and you're also growing up. Wouldn't you like to join the company to support him after you graduate? You'll be spending a lot of time together in the future."
As I spoke these words, I didn't find it as hard to accept as I had imagined. Perhaps because I had pondered them all night, I could complete my tasks calmly today.
The mood in the car shifted uncomfortably. I felt indifferent
now. I no longer saw Nicholas as my husband since I decided to end things with him, so I tried my best.
Unexpected, Claudia seemed agitated. She abruptly sat up straight and looked into my eyes. "Ariana, what are you talking about? You and Nick are meant for each other forever.
"Tll be away from home for another year until I graduate, and then I'm heading overseas for my master's. By the time I return, you'll likely have a house full of kids."
Claudia smiled, her eyes glinting with anticipation, and remained endearing.
I chose not to delve further into the intentions behind her adorable demeanor. Instead, I responded mechanically,
Nicholas and I are in a marriage alliance. There are no feelings involved. How could we possibly have children?"
Claudia looked shocked. Yet, her emotions were noticeably
more intense than before.
I redoubled my efforts. "You're akin to Nicholas and I's child. Look how well we've raised you these four years. You've blossomed beautifully.
"Nicholas has ensured your place at a top college in Radiant City. Study diligently, and make him proud, alright?"
Claudia gave me a surprised look before glancing at the back of Nicholas' head. Seeking confirmation, she asked, "Nick, is what Ariana said true?" Nicholas met my gaze in the rearview mirror, his expression
turning somber and he said nothing.
Shouldn't Claudia's happiness also bring him joy? I knew I had to ease the atmosphere as their expressions grew tense.
"Of course, it's true. You can even pick any college you want in Radiant City."
"But why were you arguing if it's a marriage alliance?" Claudia questioned.
"It was work-related. I mentioned it when you stopped by that morning, but thankfully, it's resolved now."
"Oh." Claudia's voice drew out. "Did Nick end up
compromising?"
Nicholas grunted faintly in reply. I corrected him. "I wouldn't say that. We both gave a little."
"Nick, be nicer to Ariana. Why are you being so petty?
Normally, you're the first one to make amends with me after an argument. Now that you're married to Ariana, if you don't patch things up with her, it affects my mood, too."
Claudia was one of those young women who always seemed to brighten up easily. I couldn't understand why Nicholas found her difficult.
I observed as she reached up and playfully twirled Nicholas' hair at the nape of his neck, creating an intimate moment. A smile finally spread across her face.
She looked at me and continued, "But don't worry. I'll help Nick cheer you up if you two fight again. Maybe I can send you
flowers or something."
I smiled, unsure if the emotional knot between Nicholas and Claudia had loosened. All I could sense was my bundle of frustration on the verge of bursting.
