The Day Our Promise Breaks

Chapter 337

It was Charles's car.

The window slid down, revealing his strikingly handsome face. He glanced briefly at Brooks before locking eyes with Evelyn. "Get in," he said, his voice as smooth

as ever.

Evelyn met his gaze, feeling a storm of frustration and resentment bubbling inside. She looked at the man who seemed so confident in himself, and in a moment of defiance, she hurled her purse through the open window of his car. In her heart, she couldn't help but wish Charles would just vanish from her life. With so many people leaving this world every day, why couldn't he be one of them?

Charles caught the purse without missing a beat. He didn't lose his cool; instead, he set it aside gently. Leaning over, he opened the car door, patiently waiting for Evelyn to get in. But Evelyn wasn't about to give him the satisfaction.

The less time she spent with Charles, the better. After everything he'd put her through, he was the last person she wanted to be around. She turned on her heel and walked away.

Just then, a taxi rolled up, and Evelyn seized the opportunity. She opened the door and slipped inside. Charles watched her in his rearview mirror, closed his car door, and was about to follow her.

As he began his turn, Brooks's car suddenly slammed into the back of his. Brooks had been parked on the roadside, watching the scene unfold. He could see that Evelyn needed space, but Charles was relentless in his pursuit. So, Brooks made a split-second decision-he floored it and rammed into Charles's car.

Charles's car spun halfway around, crashing into a nearby tree. The collision wasn't too severe, but it was enough to jolt him forward. Having just unbuckled his seatbelt, Charles was thrown hard against the steering wheel, knocking the wind out of him.

His expression shifted instantly from calm to shock. Brooks got out of his car, casually pulled out a checkbook, and scribbled down a number. He sauntered over to where Charles sat, leaning through the still-lowered window, and looked at Charles's grim face.noveldrama

With a smug grin, Brooks said, "Mr. Jenkins, sorry about that. My foot slipped."

"This should cover your medical

bills. I've got other things to handle,

so I won't be taking you to the

hospital, Mr. Jenkins." With that net

Brooks tossed the check into the car and strolled back to his own vehicle. He got in, revved the engine, and drove off.

At the bar, Adam had taken the day off. After getting a call from Brooks and hearing the whole saga, he rushed to find Evelyn. When Evelyn spotted him, the first thing she said was, "Adam, I need a drink."

Adam didn't stand in her way. He knew she was hurting, and without an outlet, she'd turned to alcohol for relief. He went with her to the bar.

He couldn't drink, so he just stayed by her side. Evelyn wasn't much of a drinker either, and it didn't take

long halfway through a bottle, she was already feeling it. Her bottled-up emotions broke free.

Leaning against Adam's shoulder, she sobbed openly in the bustling bar. Adam gently patted her back, his heart aching for her and simmering with anger towards Charles.

When Charles showed up, Adam carefully eased Evelyn onto the sofa. From her initial outburst to silently shedding tears, Evelyn hadn't stopped crying.

Charles picked up his pace when he saw her. His eyes were fixed on Evelyn, and seeing her tear-streaked face made his heart clench. Was being with him really so unbearable for her? But what could he do? He couldn't bear to let her go, didn't want her to belong to anyone else.

As Charles's eyes brimmed with emotion and he moved to embrace Evelyn, Adam grabbed a bottle from the table and swung it, smashing it against Charles's head.
