Chapter 1736
The following morning, Jaime found himself back at the hospital, this time with a posse of elders from the Davis family in tow. Word had only just reached these elders about Keir's grave condition, and the urgency of the situation had them rushing over without a moment's delay.
Jim, the current head of the Davis family, was pivotal to the family's future. With no wife or named successor, the stakes were high, and everyone was beginning to have their own agendas. Nick, groomed to take over, had the skills but was bogged down by some serious mental hurdles, making him less than ideal to lead the family. And then there was Miss Mira, who'd been making waves recently, but really, how formidable could a country-raised girl be?
The group piled into the elevator, heading straight up to the eleventh floor. Jaime was puzzled about why Grady hadn't arranged for someone to stop them at the entrance today. But as soon as the elevator doors slid open to reveal a lineup of armed guards, his questions were answered. The whole floor was locked down; Keir's condition must be touch-and-go.
With a hand casually tucked behind his back, Jaime traded knowing glances with the elders before stepping out of the elevator. They barely made it a few steps before being halted.
"Apologies, Mr. Jaime and esteemed elders, but Keir requires complete rest and isn't seeing visitors," Reid announced, his tone a stark contrast to Cole's icy demeanor the night before, now laced with a courteous smile.
One elder, visibly worried, asked, "So, what's really going on with Keir?"
Reid kept his smile in place. "Keir's stable, but Dr. Ray insists on strict rest. I'll make sure he gets your messages."
The underlying message was clear. "That's not good enough," another elder shot back. "We're here not only to check on Keir but to discuss.
some pressing matters. If he ne
stable, we won't take much of his time."
"We need to see for ourselves that Keir is truly okay," chimed in another elder, determined. “We're not leaving until we do."
Jaime couldn't help but smile at how
the elders were cranking up the
pressure on Grady. Even if they didn't get to see Keir, Jaime's objective was being met. The Davis family was overdue for a leadership change.
Reid stood firm, brow furrowed, as he listened to the elders' ostensibly noble intentions. He saw through their facade-they were just here to confirm if Keir's condition was beyond hope. Once they knew Keir was still out of commission, the power plays would begin? Did they really think the Davis family could hold its ground in Merrywoods without Keir's strength?
These myopic fools were laughable. Reid's eyes flicked to Jaime, suspecting that
the news of Keir's injury had been deliberately leaked by him.
"Alright, let's not jump the gun," Jaime finally piped up, perhaps catching Reid's pointed gaze. "Where's Grady? Why isn't he here?"noveldrama
