Shane wasn’t completely tactless–he didn’t cause a scene. He simply offered a few quiet words before quickly stepping away.

There were too many people coming and going. Even though Sierra wasn’t the one primarily receiving guests, she was exhausted. She couldn’t even imagine how drained Johnathan must be.

When there was a lull in the crowd, Sierra went to pour Johnathan a glass of juice.

Shane happened to catch the moment and couldn’t help commenting, “You’re really starting to look like the perfect little housewife.”

Sierra gave him a look but didn’t snap back.

Just as she was about to leave, Shane lowered his voice and said, “Someone’s digging into your prison record. Watch yourself.”

Sierra froze, stunned as she turned to look at him.

He was actually warning her?

Shane tugged at the corner of his mouth and muttered, “What’re you staring at me for? I’m not helping you. It’s just… you’re mine to mess with. Nobody else gets to do it.”

Sierra rolled her eyes at the childish remark.

Still, she couldn’t ignore what he’d said.

Someone was investigating her?

Who?

Her thoughts raced. It didn’t take long for her to form a few guesses.

The Wynn family looked united on the surface, but the internal tensions ran deep. Not everyone was happy that Wayne had handed the family over to Johnathan.

Starting with Johnathan’s own relatives–they weren’t pleased.

They were keeping quiet for now only because Wayne hadn’t been laid to rest yet.

But once the funeral was over, things would definitely blow up.

Digging into her past was just a way to get at Johnathan.

Her time in prison was nothing to be proud of. Those three years had been absolute hell–she’d been humiliated, abused, and treated worse than an animal.

She didn’t know if any photos or videos had leaked, but if anyone had them, it’d be Shane.

From the way he spoke just now, it didn’t seem like he planned on exposing anything. But with Shane, you could never be sure–he never played by the rules.

She mulled it over for a bit and decided to take it seriously.

She should’ve gone to Johnathan about it–but seeing how overwhelmed he was, she turned to Mateo instead.

When she asked for help, Mateo agreed without hesitation.

“Sierra, just tell me what you need.”

Her past wasn’t a secret. Mateo and the others already knew about it. Sierra didn’t bother hiding anything.

“Someone’s looking into what happened to me in prison. They might try to use it against Professor Yaager. Do you think you can block them or shut it down?” noveldrama

Mateo nodded immediately. “Don’t worry. Leave it to me.”

He had seen some of those things before–disgusting didn’t even begin to describe it.

Everyone knew how much Sierra had suffered during those years. To try to weaponize that against her and Johnathan… it was beyond vile.

Mateo wasn’t stupid. He could see exactly what those people were trying to do.

Dickson had overheard too. He spoke up right away.“I won’t let that happen.”

He’d been learning a lot from Matco lately.

They were supposed to spend New Year’s on a tropical island together, but all this chaos had changed everything.

He didn’t want Sierra worrying. He’d been spending time with the Radeon family, too, and his bond with Sierra had grown even stronger.

He’d been bullied himself once, and those memories were things he never wanted to relive.

And he definitely didn’t want Sierra dragged back into her own darkness either.

“Take care of yourself.”

Dickson said it with quiet seriousness.

Sierra felt warmth bloom in her chest. She didn’t know when it happened, but Dickson had grown up. He could take care of himself–and even protect her now.

“I will.”

After talking with them a bit longer and confirming everything was under control, Sierra returned to Johnathan’s side.

They were both busy all day, and it wasn’t until nightfall that they finally got a break.

On the drive back to the old house, Johnathan suddenly asked. “Did something happen today?”

He’d been swamped, yes–but that didn’t mean he wasn’t paying attention. He’d seen Sierra speaking to Mateo at length.

“Just a small matter Matco’s helping with,” Sierra replied.

Johnathan didn’t press her further. He just rubbed his temples.

Even for someone with his stamina, days of nonstop stress were finally catching up to him.

They returned to the old house. Neither of them liked being waited on, so when they walked in, there were no servants in sight. The spacious house felt empty–lonely, even.
